Today I want to talk about a topic that's super personal to me: being 🏳️🌈 LGBTQ in Eastern Europe. ️

Now, a lot of folks in the West might not realize this, but the situation for LGBTQ people in Eastern Europe is pretty rough. Less than years ago, there were brutal murders of LGBTQ people in my hometown, Bratislava, Slovakia, and the reaction from politicians? Laughably bad.

That's why I wanted to make this article: to bridge the gap between East and West. Let Western folks see what it's really like, and maybe spark some understanding.

Why is it so bad? Buckle up, because it's a combo of factors:

  • Scars of the Past: Eastern Europe has a history of being pretty darn conservative, thanks in part to the legacy of socialism. This means a lack of tolerance for anything outside the traditional mold.
  • Authoritarian Playbook: Populist politicians love to scapegoat minorities, and LGBTQ folks are a prime target. They rile up fear and xenophobia to win elections.
  • Propaganda Poison: Disinformation campaigns, often with a Russian nudge, are swirling around. These campaigns spread wild conspiracy theories and paint a scary picture of LGBTQ people.
  • The Domino Effect Fear: Even if some folks might be okay with basic rights like civil unions, they worry it's a slippery slope to things they're not comfortable with. This fear holds progress back.

The result? A massive brain drain. Talented LGBTQ people are hightailing it out of Eastern Europe to find places where they can be themselves and reach their full potential. This isn't just a personal loss, it's a huge loss for these countries.

So, what can be done? Here's the thing: there are good people in Eastern Europe fighting for change. We need more awareness, more education, and a shift in attitudes.

If you're from the West, be an ally. Spread the word and show your support. If you're from the East and agree with what I'm saying, let's connect and keep fighting for a brighter future. ✊
