Is There a Lesbian Grindr? What Queer Women Use (2026)

Is there a Grindr for lesbians? Not really. Why it never took off, the one new app trying, and what queer women actually use for casual dating and more.

No, there is no true lesbian Grindr. Grindr is built for gay, bi, trans and queer men, and every app that copied its "who's nearby right now" grid for women has either faded or stayed small. The closest thing in 2026 is Sapphi, a new invite-only app. Most queer women use Zoe, Her, Feeld, Lex or Tinder instead.

That's the short answer. The longer one is more interesting, because the reasons there is no lesbian Grindr say a lot about what actually works for meeting women. Below: why the idea keeps failing, whether lesbians can use Grindr itself, the one new app trying, and an honest breakdown of what each app is good for, from a quick casual meet to a girlfriend.

The quick answer

  • Closest to Grindr itself: Sapphi, a sex-positive app with a grid of nearby profiles. It's new, invite-only and still small.
  • Most open about casual: Feeld, if you're fine sharing the app with men and couples.
  • Chat first, then meet: Zoe and Her, both built for queer women, with Zoe free to match and chat.
  • Say exactly what you want: Lex, where you write a post instead of swiping.
  • Biggest pool: Tinder, if you live in a big city and filter carefully.

Is there a lesbian app like Grindr?

Not really, and it isn't for lack of trying. People have been asking for one since Grindr launched in 2009. Autostraddle was already writing about the missing "lesbian Grindr" in 2011, and the location-based apps it found for women were close to empty. Others followed, from Brenda and Qrushr to Scissr, pitched in Chicago as a classier Grindr for women. None of them became the default app for queer women.

Even Grindr tried. Its spin-off Blendr launched in 2011 for straight people and women, drew criticism for asking women to broadcast their location to strangers, and faded within a few years before shutting down in 2022.

The app that came closest to the brief is Her. Its founder, Robyn Exton, was inspired by Grindr when she launched it as Dattch in 2013. By 2015 she was calling Her "literally the exact opposite of Grindr", because women who asked for instant-meetup features rarely used them once they existed.

Why has a lesbian Grindr never taken off?

There's no single reason, and some popular explanations are weaker than they sound. These are the ones with real evidence behind them:

  1. Safety, and men. A map of nearby women is a gift to men who want to find them. In Pew Research Center's 2023 survey, 56% of women under 50 who use dating apps had been sent unwanted explicit images, and 11% had been threatened with physical harm. LGB users report more of this than straight users do. Women-focused apps have always had to fight men posing as women, and a live location grid makes that fight much harder.
  2. What people ask for vs. what they use. Her's founder found that instant-meetup features women requested went largely unused. In Pew's survey, 13% of women who use dating apps called casual sex a major reason for using them, against 31% of men. That's a gender gap in why people open the app, not proof that queer women don't want casual sex.
  3. Thin, scattered numbers. A Grindr-style grid only works when there are lots of people within a few miles. Gallup puts lesbians at roughly 1 to 2% of US adults, spread across the whole country, so outside big cities the grid looks empty. Scissr is the cautionary tale here: one Autostraddle writer's verdict was simply that it never had enough users.
  4. Money. Founders of queer women's apps have long said investors don't see the market as profitable. In 2019 Her was running on a team of about five engineers, next to the hundreds behind the big mainstream apps.

Two explanations you'll see that don't hold up as well: app-store rules against "hookup" apps (Grindr and Scruff have operated under those rules for years), and the idea that lesbians simply don't want casual sex. Plenty of queer writers push back on that last one, and the evidence for it is thin.

Can lesbians use Grindr?

Technically yes, but it isn't really for you. Grindr added gender options including "woman" and "trans woman" in November 2017, and its community guidelines welcome trans and nonbinary people. But the app describes itself as a network for gay, bi, trans and queer people, the people on it are overwhelmingly men looking for men, and its photo rules even treat women's bodies differently from men's. A lesbian on Grindr will mostly find men, and not ones looking for her.

What is a "femme Grindr"?

There's no app by that name. People searching "femme Grindr" usually mean a Grindr-style app for queer women, which brings you back to Sapphi and the alternatives on this page. One source of confusion: Match Group once launched a lesbian dating app called Femme in Brazil, but it was never a US product and isn't a Grindr equivalent.

Sapphi: the newest app trying to be the lesbian Grindr

If you want the literal thing, Sapphi is the closest app that exists right now. It launched on iOS in February 2026, calls itself "a safe, sex-positive app for dykes," and is built for lesbian, queer and trans people. Instead of swiping, you get a grid of people nearby, plus "Secrets," classifieds, and a map of queer places.

What keeps it from being Grindr is access. Sapphi is invite-only: you apply or enter an invite code, and each request is reviewed by hand, which the team says keeps out bots and catfish. That's a real safety win, but it means you can't download it and see who's around tonight. It also has only a few dozen App Store ratings so far, so outside big cities the grid may be quiet.

Good for: casual, sex-positive meetups with a vetted crowd, if you can get in.

What apps do lesbians use to hook up?

Mostly apps that weren't built only for hookups. According to Pew, Tinder is the app LGB women use most, and about 8% have used Her. In practice, queer women who want something casual tend to use one of these:

Feeld

Feeld is the most openly casual mainstream app. It's built for "open-minded" dating, lets you pick from 20+ genders and sexualities, and is the home of non-monogamy and kink. Couples can link profiles. The catch for queer women is that it's open to everyone, so expect men and couples hoping for a third. Majestic membership was $29.99 for 30 days on the App Store when we checked.

Good for: casual dating, kink, and ethical non-monogamy, if a mixed crowd doesn't bother you.

Tinder

Tinder has the biggest pool by far, which is why so many queer women end up on it. You can set relationship goals, including short-term options, so it's easy to signal that you want something casual. The downside is well known: in a mostly straight app, women seeking women get a steady stream of men and couples who game the settings.

Good for: big cities, where the sheer numbers make up for the noise.

Lex

Lex started as text personals and still lets you write a post saying exactly who or what you're looking for, then wait for replies. That makes it one of the few places you can be upfront about wanting something casual without a swipe deck in the way. It's open to the wider queer community, not only women, and these days it leans as much toward friends, groups and events as dates.

Good for: saying what you want in your own words.

Her

Her is one of the biggest apps made for queer women and says it has 15 million members, though that's its own figure. Its own FAQ answers the Grindr question by saying there's a bit of a Grindr vibe, but the focus is quality connections, not just quick hookups. It adds communities and events on top of matching. Her has been owned by Match Group since May 2025, and Premium starts at $14.99 a month.

Good for: a large queer women's network with a social side.

Where Zoe fits

Zoe isn't a hookup app, and we won't pretend it is. There's no live grid and no "available now" feed, and explicit photos aren't allowed. What it does well is the step before any meetup: finding real queer women near you and talking to them.

Zoe is made for lesbian, bi and queer women, with 7.2M+ registered members and a 4.5 rating from more than 33,000 US App Store ratings. Matching and chatting are free. Only people you've matched with can message you. Photo Verification shows you who has proved they look like their pictures, and you can ask a match to verify before you meet. Private photos, disappearing Snaps and Private Mode give you control over who sees what.

Whether that conversation turns into a date, a friendship or something more casual is up to the two of you.

What app has the most lesbians?

Nobody publishes verified, independent numbers, so treat every figure as a company claim. Her says it has 15 million members. Zoe has 7.2M+ registered members. Tinder almost certainly has the most queer women in absolute terms, simply because it's so large, and Pew found it's the app LGB women use most often.

"Registered" isn't the same as "active near you," either. The number that matters is how many queer women open the app within your distance, and that's far higher in New York or LA than in a small town. If an app feels empty, widen your distance or try a second one alongside it.

How to meet someone casually and stay safe

Online dating is how most same-sex couples now meet: a Stanford-led study found about 65% of same-sex couples who got together in 2017 met online. It works, but the risks are real, so build in a few habits:

  • Verify before you meet. Look for a verification badge, ask for a quick video call, or run their photos through a reverse image search. On Zoe you can send a verification request to a match.
  • Meet somewhere public first. A bar, a cafe, anywhere busy. Get there and back on your own.
  • Tell a friend. Share who you're meeting, where, and when, and check in at a set time.
  • Watch for the money turn. Reported romance-scam losses rose 22% in the FTC's latest figures, about $2,020 per person on average. Never send money, gift cards or crypto to someone you haven't met.
  • Be clear about what you want. Casual works best when you both know it's casual. Say so early, and it's always fine to change your mind.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a lesbian version of Grindr?

Not a true one. Grindr is built for men, and apps that copied its nearby grid for women have faded or stayed small. The closest in 2026 is Sapphi, an invite-only, sex-positive app for lesbian, queer and trans people. Most queer women use Zoe, Her, Feeld, Lex or Tinder instead.

What apps do lesbians use to hook up?

Feeld is the most openly casual, but it's open to everyone, including men and couples. Tinder has the biggest pool in big cities. Lex lets you post exactly what you're looking for. Sapphi is a new invite-only app built around a nearby grid. Zoe and Her are better for chatting first and meeting when it feels right.

Can lesbians use Grindr?

Technically yes. Grindr added a woman gender option in 2017. But the app describes itself as a network for gay, bi, trans and queer people, the people on it are overwhelmingly men seeking men, and its photo rules treat women's bodies differently. A lesbian on Grindr will mostly find men who aren't looking for her.

Why is there no lesbian Grindr?

The main reasons are safety, since a map of nearby women attracts men posing as women, thinner local numbers outside big cities, a gap between the instant-meetup features women ask for and what they use, and little investor funding for queer women's apps. App-store rules and the idea that lesbians don't want casual sex explain much less.

What is the best free app to meet lesbians?

Zoe is free to match and chat, is built for lesbian, bi and queer women, and has Photo Verification. Her, Lex and Tinder all have free tiers with paid upgrades, and Sapphi is free for now but invite-only.

Is Her the lesbian Grindr?

No. Her's founder was inspired by Grindr, but she later called Her the opposite of it, and Her's own FAQ says it focuses on quality connections rather than quick hookups. It's one of the largest apps made for queer women and adds communities and events. Match Group, which owns Tinder and Hinge, has owned Her since May 2025.

Whether you want a casual night out, a new friend or someone you'll still be texting next year, there's an app here that fits, and you don't have to pick just one. For the full picture, see our best lesbian dating apps roundup and our guide to meeting lesbians near you.
